The first edition ofPlace and Experienceestablished Jeff Malpas as one of the leading philosophers and thinkers of place and space and provided a creative and refreshing alternative to prevailing post-structuralist and postmodern theories of place. It is a foundational and ground-breaking book in its attempt to lay out a sustained and rigorous account of place and its significance.
The main argument ofPlace and Experiencehas three strands: first, that human being is inextricably bound to place; second, that place encompasses subjectivity and objectivity, being reducible to neither but foundational to both; and third that place, which is distinct from, but also related to space and time, is methodologically and ontologically fundamental. The development of this argument involves considerations concerning the nature of place and its relation to space and time; the character of that mode of philosophical investigation that is oriented to place and that is referred to as 'philosophical topography'; the nature of subjectivity and objectivity as inter-related concepts that also connect with intersubjectivity; and the way place is tied to memory, identity, and the self. Malpas draws on a rich array of writers and philosophers, including Wordsworth, Kant, Proust, Heidegger and Donald Davidson.
This second edition is revised throughout, including a new chapter on place and technological modernity, especially the seeming loss of place in the contemporary world, and a new Foreword by Edward Casey. It also includes a new set of additional features, such as chapter summaries, illustrations, annotated further reading, and a glossary, which make this second edition more useful to teachers and students alike.

What the intentional stance is meant to accomplish is to make us sensitive to the places in which we dwell such that we perceive meaning in their organi- zation (2002, 175). Finding an intrinsic meaning in a place is thought to make plain the labor of those places in supporting life, thus command- ing our respect (Plumwood 2005, 36–40). What is your truth? Is truth something that is limited to perception or does it transcend what we perceive to be reality? Is it objective or subjective? If truth really exists, why then are there so many different views and opinions in our world? On the other hand, if absolute truth doesn’t exist, why do we try so hard to bring order to the chaos of life? Because many today are uncomfortable with the idea of absolute truth, the opposing view that truth is relative has become popular. But how can the idea that there is no absolute truth be true, if there is really no absolute truth?

When I was in high school, a friend who must have been really enjoying his philosophy class, asked us a question that we probably had never considered until then. “If a tree falls in a forest and you are not there to see it, then did the tree really fall? My friend argued quite persuasively that it didn’t. According to him, truth is only what we are able to perceive. I don’t remember how I responded to his arguments, but I do remember that I didn’t agree. If truth is only what we know, then why do we chase after knowledge as much as we do?

There are realities that only require the five senses to perceive, but there are also realities that require both mind and heart in order to be realized. When Satan began his rebellion, there was no doubt of God’s existence. The basis of Satan’s rebellion was that his way of doing things were better than God’s. (Isaiah 14:12-14) We don’t have to look far to see that Satan’s ideas on how the universe should be governed were not only wrong, but fatal. If we accept the truth that God has placed in every human heart, (Romans 8:16) we would not only be able to perceive the reality of his existence, but also the reality of his wisdom. Psalms 119:142)

Even though our sins have separated us from our creator, (Isaiah 59:2) God has given us much evidence of his desire to be reunited with us. This is why he became a man and dwelt among us. He came to show us that truth is more than just an abstract reality, it is a person. (John 14:6) This truth is revealed in our hearts. (2 Corinthians 4:6) It leads us back to communion with our Heavenly Father, the place from which we fell. ( Psalms 43:3)

As we receive the truth of God’s word revealed in our hearts, we are drawn closer to him and he draws nearer to us. The more of his presence we experience the more we desire. This is why David asked God to send out light and truth so that he could be lead in to God’s dwelling place. (Psalms 43:3) It was after reflecting on this verse that this song was written. This kind of yearning for truth can only be motivated by a love for the one who identifies himself as “truth.” So then, to love truth, is to love God and to love God is to love truth. When the reality of our faith is revealed to our senses and we are face to face with our Creator, there will be no room for doubt nor will we look for reasons to doubt as Satan did. It will be evident that God’s laws are true and best.
